Not all that glitters is gold - Asian students in New Zealand

Posted by Andrew Butcher on July 13th, 2006

Asian students have studied in New Zealand for the last fifty years. Asian immigration to New Zealand provides a backdrop for their arrival. The first European settlers arrived in New Zealand digging for proverbial gold in the form of a better lifestyle; the first Asian settlers, on the other hand, arrived digging for real gold, and later Asian settlers, for degrees. Six ‘arrival times’ define this Asian immigration. Against this backdrop, there are two ‘arrival times’ for Asian students.

Mass production by Roger Wilson (Review in NZ Listener July 15-21, 2006, Vol 204, No 3453)

Karl Jenkins’s “The Armed Man”, commissioned by the Royal Armouries to commemorate the millennium, is an extraordinary phenomenon, enormously popular in the UK and beyond (see DVD review, page 49). All Together Now: Living Christ in a Community of Faith

Posted by Andrew Butcher on July 11th, 2006

We are not alone. We are not strong. And we are not in it for ourselves. Hear how the writer of Hebrews puts it, in Chapters 11 and 12…

The Essential Elements of an Informed Christian Theology of Creation

Posted by Andrew Butcher on July 11th, 2006

An informed Christian theology of Creation has significant implications for how we see ourselves, humanity in general, and God. It moves beyond the mechanics of Creation (i.e. the argument of six literal days or six spans of time)  to its implications. This essay suggests that there are four essential elements. However, two caveats are necessary at this juncture: there are other elements, which space does not permit a treatment of; and the distinction between these four elements is more arbitrary than actual. Faith Seeking Understanding

Posted by Andrew Butcher on July 11th, 2006

To say that Christian theology is a process of “faith seeking understanding” may mean a number of approaches to considering faith, in the first instance and Christian theology, in the second instance. Space does not permit either an extensive or exhaustive travail of the territory from Abraham to Augustine and onwards. (Hays, for example, suggests that Abraham is the prototype of the community of faith, which interprets all human experience through trust in God’s word.)  However, here, I seek to answer this question within three defining characteristics: faith asks questions, faith is never in isolation, and faith is dynamic.
