It is 16 years since the Festival last staged an opera by Wagner (the Master singers) apart from an NZSO concert version of Das Rhinegold in 1997 - much too long.
Wagner’s last opera has perhaps a misleading reputation for being heavygoing. Here, even without full staging , is a performance that is not just superb from every critical point of view, but is in turn rapturous, moving, thrilling and plain entertaining - all four and half hours of it. A real landmark in New Zealand’s musical development.
