The best way to encapsulate international students in New Zealand universities is through identifying the shift in focus, as ably identified in Nicholas Tarling’s new book, from aid to trade.  From six dental nurses in 1951, under the Colombo Plan, to 77,416 tertiary international students in March 2004 (28% of whom were in universities),   however, does more than suggest a shifting focus, or – indeed – a substantial numerical increase.   The types of students, the courses they study, the length they stay, the expectations upon them, and their post-study intentions have also undergone significant shifts. Yet, none of these shifts have happened in isolation – culturally, politically or globally. Read more…
