No Place Like Home - Anthropology Conference Paper

Posted by Andrew Butcher on November 8th, 2003

“No Place Like Home” Paper presented at the Association of Social Anthropologists Conference “Whose Home?”, Auckland, NZ, November 2003

Based on PhD research, this paper argues that the re-entry of international students into their countries of origin profoundly challenges their notions of ‘longing for belonging’ and forces them to reconstitute their ‘home’-making. Using a framework of transnationalism, this paper argues that, for these international students, home is no longer place-bound (if ever it was); that intimate relationships may exist beyond geographical propinquity; and that rather than migration (and re-migration) disrupting the relationship between self-identity and ‘home’, it can instead allow for new discoveries for new ‘homes’.
