The Needs of International Students in New Zealand

‘What do international students need? It would seem that they don’t need any money, with their flash cars and inner-city apartments. Although they probably could do with learning about the way things are done here in New Zealand and stop kidnapping each other’. This view may appear extreme but it is nevertheless a pervasive view in the public discourse about international students in general and Asian students in particular. The increasing nature of this discourse and the political climate, particularly in the lead-up to the next General Election, is one that is worth critically investigating.

Recently, the pastoral care of international students has received attention with the introduction of a code to require minimum standards in the international education industry.  However, there is a danger that regulated minimum standards can become prescriptive and reduce performance to the lowest common denominator (which, in turn, defines the highest standard).  Read more…
