History making is part and parcel of New Zealand’s heritage and the year 1951 marks a watershed in New Zealand history. It was not only the year of the famous waterfront strike, it was also a year for other kinds of history making: New Zealand was the first country in the world to receive students under the Colombo Plan. These were not the first international students to ever study in New Zealand, but they were the vanguard of what would turn out to be one of New Zealand’s biggest industries. They came under the auspices of aid, but this was the battle for the minds of the movers and shakers of the twentieth century, particularly in a world under threat from Communism and in the midst of a Cold War.
